As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to rise in popularity, the infrastructure needed to support this growing market must evolve as well. Traditional power grids are increasingly strained by the demand for energy, particularly in areas where infrastructure is outdated or inadequate. In response to this challenge, microgrid technology has emerged as a key solution, providing localized, independent power sources that can support EV charging in a variety of environments.

At Momentum Groups, we’re proud to introduce our innovative charging skid, a pioneering microgrid solution designed to meet the unique demands of the EV charging landscape. Our charging skid offers a versatile, sustainable, and reliable power source that can be deployed virtually anywhere, ensuring that EVs have access to the energy they need, when and where they need it.

Understanding Microgrids and Their Role in EV Charging

A microgrid is a small-scale power grid that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main electrical grid. Unlike traditional grids, which rely on centralized power generation and extensive distribution networks, microgrids are localized systems capable of generating, storing, and distributing power within a defined area. This makes them ideal for remote locations, areas with unreliable grid access, or scenarios where a temporary or portable power solution is required.

In the context of EV charging, microgrids offer several key advantages:

Resilience: Microgrids provide a dependable power source in locations where the traditional grid is unstable or unavailable. This is crucial for ensuring that EVs can be charged in all environments, from remote highways to off-grid areas.

Sustainability: Microgrids can be powered by renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, or, in our case, propane, renewable propane, natural gas or zero emission tier 4 diesel. This aligns with the broader goals of reducing the carbon footprint of transportation and supporting the transition to sustainable energy.

Scalability: Microgrids can be scaled to meet specific energy needs, whether it’s powering a single EV charger or a larger network of charging stations. This flexibility makes them an ideal solution for a wide range of applications, from individual use to fleet management.

The Momentum Groups Charging Skid: A Microgrid Solution

Our mobile charging skid is a self-contained microgrid solution that brings all the benefits of microgrid technology to the EV charging space. Here’s how it works:

Integrated Generator and Charger: The skid features a high-capacity generator and charger, capable of delivering fast and efficient charging to multiple EVs. The generator can be powered by sustainable fuels like propane, renewable propane, natural gas or zero emission tier 4 diesel (CARB certified), ensuring that the charging process is both eco-friendly and reliable. Our chargers are OCPP compliant and Energy Star certified.

Moveable and Versatile: Mounted on a skid platform, this solution can be transported to any location where EV charging is needed, while still being considered a stationary microgrid solution. Whether you’re supporting a fleet of vehicles in a remote area or providing public charging in a location with grid limitations, our charging skid is up to the task.

High-Efficiency Charging: The skid is capable of charging vehicles from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes, with the capacity to support up to 16 vehicles over an 8-hour period. This makes it an ideal solution for high-demand scenarios where quick turnaround times are essential. Power configuration options include: 7.2-19.2kW (AC) – 50kW, 120kW, 180kW, or 360kW (DC Fast).

Why Choose a Microgrid Solution for EV Charging?

The benefits of microgrid solutions like our charging skid are clear: they provide a reliable, scalable, and sustainable power source that can be deployed wherever it’s needed. As the demand for EV charging continues to grow, the ability to deliver power in off-grid or remote locations will become increasingly important. Our charging skid is designed to meet this demand, ensuring that EVs can be charged efficiently and sustainably, no matter the location, all while meeting stringent state and federal standards.
