Commercial Fleet Electrification

Misconceptions, challenges, and how to move forward

6/29/2022

Thinking about fleet electrification? You're not alone. Numerous companies with fleets are looking to switch out their ICE vehicles for electric or hybrid models.

As a fleet management company and communicating with companies, we've learned that there are some common misconceptions about the overall expense of electric vehicles and setting up charging. With that being said, it is a complex process and comes with challenges. Although it's a big project, you can move forward and explore your options.

Misconception #1

Running electric vehicles is more expensive than ICE vehicles

A red and a blue electric car are charging at a gas station.

If you just look at the cost to install charging stations and acquiring electric vehicles next to a similar ICE model it would be easy to think it’s more expensive to go electric for commercial use. Upfront costs can be more on the initial investment, but the savings are clearly seen in the lifetime value of ROI.

Electric vehicles have big advantages. Fewer moving parts mean less spend on maintenance and repairs. Cutting out midday fueling creates less downtime for vehicles and promotes more productive drivers. The cost of fueling is lower against gas powered vehicles when charging is set up properly.

Your company may also possibly qualify and access grants, incentives or rebates for using electric vehicles and/or installing charging stations. These are offered from the government on the local, state, and federal level, as well as from energy companies.

We’re providing companies with estimated savings of $5,000 - $10,000 per year by switching to electric vehicles. And this is per vehicle!

Misconception #2

We can't install EV charging stations at our facility because we don’t own the building

A row of electric cars are charging at charging stations.

Having chargers at a building adds tremendous value with the influx of people acquiring EVs. It’s a great asset for the building owner to have charging infrastructure up and running if you were to leave the premises. How so? Charging stations can help attract future tenants, increase lease prices, and grow visitor traffic, including generate additional revenue from charging sessions.

There are a couple options to have charging stations right at your facility if you don’t own a building. One is to take your charging infrastructure proposition to the owner or management company and negotiate your lease costs or contract. If that doesn’t work out, movable off-grid charging units are a perfect solution because they’re not attached to the property. They are self-contained so there is no installation and they can easily be transported if you move to another location.

Fleet EV parking facilities are another option. Using a site removes any challenge of not being able to add charging stations at your building, including lack of power or space.

Misconception #3

Our drivers won’t be able to find charging stations nearby out on the road if needed

Range anxiety, the fear of running low on power and not being able to find a charging station, isn’t a new concern. And it’s true, a few years ago range anxiety may have been a solid issue.

Now the landscape is different. The range of EVs has increased in the last few years. The infrastructure and amount of charging stations are constantly growing- and there's billions in federal funding to build a network of 500,000 chargers. You also have better control of charging when you have your own stations at your own facility and/or at employees homes. A dedicated midday charge can also be incorporated into your solution.

CHALLENGE

Electrifying your fleet is a big project

The question that most companies looking to electrify ask is ‘Where do I start?’ Well you have to plan, and plan early. It can take anywhere from 18- 36 months to electrify depending on the size of your fleet and its needs.

You don’t want to get electric vehicles (EVs) without fleet charging, and you wouldn’t want to put in charging without having vehicles to plug into them.

The balance is to set up charging while simultaneously bringing on EVs. There's research to adopt EVs that fit your use case and the range you need. And at the same time, find out your property’s charging capabilities, energy costs, and install the best chargers and software for your fleet. This also includes deciding whether to add charging at employee’s homes or not.

Some fleets run pilot programs with electric vehicles to test how it works for their company and use case while gaining valuable data.

While setting up charging, you would also need to implement a system and add skilled management. Training your drivers, monitoring, maintenance, emergency solutions, and vehicle charging schedules all have lots of moving parts. Your investment should work for the business, not against it.

A clear but workable roadmap is essential to make the conversion happen. However, like with any big project, expect some bumps in the road so to speak.

How to move your fleet forward

Electrifying your fleet on your own can be daunting. If you partner with us, we provide you with a full fleet consultation and analysis along with a customized migration plan here at Momentum Groups.
